Students work in groups to discuss strategies for determining percent of change including taxes, tips, and markup. Students analyze strategies including one-step with decimals, two-step with decimals, one-step with a proportion, and two-step with a proportion. First, students should read through the example and practice problem on the half sheet of paper and complete the practice problem independently. Then students move into 8 different groups based on the letter they have been assigned. They will be in groups with others who have used the same strategy. They should confirm their answer, discuss why the strategy works, and ask questions about anything they didn’t understand. Then students move into 6 different groups based on the number they have been assigned. They will be in groups with others who have used different strategies. They should take turns explaining the different strategies used and then fill in the chart.
