This novel study takes students through the first Percy Jackson novel chapter by chapter, and includes a pre-reading activity and culminating project.
With each chapter, the students determine personal vocabulary words and use context to define them, answer comprehension questions, and complete an activity focused on an element of literature. Each activity is different and ranges from plot analysis to theme. Some activities are interactive, such as Tableaux and Character Vignettes. Others, such as extension menus or graphic organizers, are independent activities.
The final project focuses on character analysis. Groups of students choose music to match five major characters, write an analysis of their choices, and make a movie of themselves playing or singing the songs and reading their analyses.
Covering a chapter each day is very effective for this novel study, and the variety of activities keep the students engaged well.
