Product Description

This product is available as part of a bundle for Collection 4 as well as individually sold here.

These interactive notebook activities are scaffolded to help your students to write a persuasive speech via Performance Task Collection 4. Filled with engaging, attractive illustrations and step-by-step directions, these activities are specifically designed to help students to brainstorm, research, organize and write a speech from the Collection 4 reading selections.

Common core-based lesson plans, rubrics and keys are all included as well as easy to cut pieces that save time. Every teacher has their own preference for notebook types. So, I have decided to design as a full 8 ½”X 11” inch page, which can be reduced on a copier by 75% to fit composition notebooks but would require trimming. I usually print off two pages per sheet on the copier and then cut in half, so I only have 1 cut and it fits perfectly into the composition book.

Brainstorm Page and Evidence Notes

Students free write or list their ideas about whether or not people should keep exotic animals as pets. Students complete the Level Up Activity: Evidence.

Research Pages

Students can gather their information from the various articles both in the book and on the FYI site. Links have been vetted (for appropriateness in middle school) and provided in the Table of Contents.

Organizing Speech

Students use this page to organize their ideas and how they want to present them.

Drafting Speech

This is a guided writing template to help students who may struggle with drafting an essay or argumentative essay in particular.

Ideas for Presentation

This page gives students ideas for how they could make a presentation. Includes a variety of web-based products students could use.

Standards-based rubrics included for each writing assignment, which allows students to understand what they have accomplished or need to revise to improve their writing. I usually allow students to revise if they receive a 2 or lower (for me a 2 is a C) for a higher score (or grade).

This product was developed by an award-winning, highly qualified teacher and 21-year veteran of the classroom, with ESL and ESE certification. I use these materials with my students in my classroom, so I know what students respond to and I try to make materials in which ALL students can be successful.

In this resource, you will find a variety of Interactive Notebook activities that will support your students’ understanding of the HMH Collections textbook.

Lessons Pages are the TEACHER input pages that are designed to be used as the right-hand side pages of the notebook. However, you can use them anyway you want. These lessons coincide with the lessons in the textbook that appear after every selection, however, they are recreated as an engaging guided notetaking activity with fun illustrations. Keys are provided for these resources, unless students are supposed to come up with the ideas as a class.

Activity Pages are the STUDENT output pages that are designed to be used on the left-hand side pages of the notebook. These often include writing, drawing, graphic organizers, etc. Rubrics for all writing assignments are included.
