This resource introduces students to what perimeter is and how to find the perimeter of shapes.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

✅PERIMETER MINI LESSON

There is an interactive mini-lesson included that students can glue into their notebooks to help them have something to reference after learning how to find the perimeter of rectangles (and other shapes!). This interactive notebook entry is "no-nonsense" which means that students simply have to cut and glue. There is no folding to make it easier for you to teach the lesson faster and to keep students on track.

✅10 PERIMETER WORKSHEETS

In the ten perimeter worksheets included, students learn how to calculate the perimeter of shapes (mostly rectangles). I added 10 differentiated worksheets to allow you to give students the work that is best for them! In the worksheets provided, students find the perimeter of household items, rectangles, other shapes, a zoo, find perimeter given all sides, given two sides, given one side, and more!

✅ 4 PERIMETER ERROR ANALYSIS PAGES

Students look at four different work samples and decide which pages are right and which are wrong based on what is shown. These are perfect for math talk or whole group discussions. The error analysis pages help with evaluating common third grade math mistakes.

✅CUT AND GLUE ACTIVITY

There is a cut-and-glue activity about perimeter on the farm where students have to glue the correct farm animal in the correct pen depending on the perimeter of each pen. Color and black and white versions are included

✅EMOJI MATH SORT

This is a sorting activity where students put a smile or a frown emoji on top of each task card. If the perimeter is correct, a happy smile is put on top of it. If the wrong perimeter was found, the students put a frown on top of the task card.

✅ SCAVENGER HUNT

Place the task cards all around your classroom. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students walk around and find the perimeter of each real-life object and record it on their paper.

✅GAME #1: COUNTING THE PERIMETER

There is also a perimeter game included! In the game, students have to find the perimeter of each figure on each task card. They are able to use building blocks or counting cubes to help them get the "hands-on" feel they need to build their understanding of perimeter. I have also included a version of the game that includes finding both the area and perimeter of each task card. Use whichever version works best for your class.

✅ GAME #2: BUILD A BEACH SCENE GAME

Each player gets a background to build their beach on. Playing cards and pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your beach. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 items on their beach wins!

✅ GAME #3: WHOLE CLASS GAME

I call this game "Bucket Filler!". Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it's correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc).

✅ GAME #4: PERIMETER RACING GAME

This game is called "Line Them Up!". In the game, students race to see which team can line their cards up in the correct order first. Here are the steps to play. Mix up each set of cards well. Give a set of cards to each team. Start the race. Students find the START card first. They put this down. Once the start card is found, students find the answer to the equation. They continue to “Line Them Up” until they reach the FINISH card. The first team done wins!

✅21 AREA AND PERIMETER POSTERS

There are 21 area and perimeter posters for you to hang on the wall for students to reference during your area and perimeter unit. These are a great helpful reminder for students when learning about the difference between area and perimeter.

This resource includes everything you need to teach perimeter to your students. This product was designed for third graders, but would work great as a review for fourth graders as well. A color and black and white version is included for all games and activities.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Common Core Standards 3.MD.5-3.MD.8:

  • Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
  • Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
  • Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
  • Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 3.7B: determine the perimeter of a polygon or a missing length when given perimeter and remaining side lengths in problems

This aligns with 4th Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 4.5C: use models to determine the formulas for the perimeter of a rectangle (l + w + l + w or 2l + 2w), including the special form for perimeter of a square (4s) and the area of a rectangle (l x w)
  • TEKS 4.5D: solve problems related to perimeter and area of rectangles where dimensions are whole numbers

This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)

  • MA.3.GR.2.3 Solve mathematical and real-world problems involving the perimeter and area of rectangles with whole-number side lengths using a visual model and a formula.
  • MA.2.GR.2.1 Explore perimeter as an attribute of a figure by placing unit segments along the boundary without gaps or overlaps. Find perimeters of rectangles by counting unit segments.
  • MA.2.GR.2.2 Find the perimeter of a polygon with whole-number side lengths. Polygons are limited to triangles, rectangles, squares and pentagons.
