Word problems relating to perimeter, area, measurement, and money. Students work from diagrams and verbal information about measurement to infer and calculate perimeter and cost of paint for striping football fields and basketball courts.
Calculator use is an option. Several of the problems require multiplication of money amounts.
Here are the skills involved in these problems:
1. Calculating perimeters
2. Converting linear measurements from feet to yards and vice-versa.
3. Calculating area of rectangles.
4. General problem solving, including “interpret the remainder” questions.
5. Multiplication of money amounts by single-digit numbers.
Common Core Standards:
4.OA.3: “Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted.”
4.MD.2: “Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, …and money, including problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit.”
4.MD.3: “Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems.”
