Let your students help Santa with this set of 22 perimeter and area problems. They’ll love solving these real-world problems in December or anytime during the year!

You will receive two files (both in grayscale): Beginning and Challenging. Students can start with problem solving activities for beginners then solve the more challenging problems. Or, to differentiate in a mixed-level class, you can give beginning level problems to some students and challenging problems to others.

Beginning (10 activities):

• Find the perimeter and area of Santa’s calendar.

• Determine whether Santa needs to find area or perimeter when buying new carpeting. Find the area of Santa’s workshop.

• Determine whether Santa needs to find area or perimeter when adding trim around the ceiling of his workshop. Find the perimeter of Santa’s workshop.

• Determine whether Santa needs to find area or perimeter when placing brick in his entryway. Figure missing length and width from other measurements in a diagram. Find the area of the entryway.

• Determine whether Santa needs to find area or perimeter when painting a wall. Find the area of the wall by subtracting the area of a window.

• Determine whether Santa needs to find area or perimeter when replacing a windowpane. Find the area of the window by dividing the total area of four panes.

• Determine whether Santa needs to find area or perimeter when wrapping a present. Find the surface area of a box. (Two problems like this are included.)

• Find the possible configurations for a reindeer pen with 16 sections. Determine which provides the greatest area.

• Determine the surface area of a section of fence given the dimensions of each board.

Challenging (12 activities):

• Find the perimeter and area of the frame of Santa’s calendar. Given that the frame is one inch wide, determine the perimeter and area of the calendar.

• Given a diagram with three rooms, calculate the amount of carpet Santa needs to purchase.

• Given a diagram with three rooms, calculate the amount of trim Santa needs to purchase to install around the ceilings of each room.

• Find the area of Santa’s garden along the sides and back of his workshop. (Requires understanding of added length when rounding corners.)

• Determine the amount of trim needed to go around Santa’s garden. (Requires understanding of added length when rounding corners.)

• Determine how many bricks Santa needs to buy for his entryway. (Requires finding missing dimensions in a diagram, converting meters to centimeters, multiplication and division of large numbers.)

• Determine how many cans of paint Santa needs to buy to paint a wall. (Requires students to find the area of the wall by subtracting the area of two windows, multiply to find how much is needed for two coats, divide and interpret remainder to determine how many cans of paint are needed.)

• Calculate the surface area of a box without a top.

• Calculate how many rolls of wrapping paper are needed to wrap a box. (Two problems require students to determine the surface area of a box, convert wrapping paper dimensions from feet to inches, determine surface area of the wrapping paper, divide and interpret remainder to determine how many rolls of wrapping paper are needed.)

• Determine the surface area of sixteen sections of fence given the dimensions of each board in one section.

• Find the possible configurations for a reindeer pen with sixteen sections. Determine which provides the greatest area. (For an extra challenge, find the actual area of each pen.)
