This 3x3 vocabulary grid is a terrific manipulative for getting students to interact with vocabulary. Students match 18 vocabulary terms with their definitions. The definitions wrap at the edges (left to right and top to bottom). I give the students the center square to start. A 9 character message can be hidden in the center of the 9 squares which are cut up into 9 pieces. It is very easy to check the answers using the hidden message in the middle of the squares. "Chemistry" is a 9 letter word that can be used, for example, as the answer to "What kind of tree does a chemist put up for the holidays?" Students can then copy the vocab words and their definitions to an answer sheet (A free product in my teacher store). Can be done individually or in groups of 2-3.
I draw my message by hand in the uncut printout then photocopy as many as I need to cut up. The original uncut page is the answer key.
I keep the puzzle squares in plastic baggies (or paper clips if baggies are not available.)
