This is a great hands-on manipulative that helps students understand properties and examples of the groups in a Period Table. Students will first sort the groups with a list of facts on each card. The second sort has students matching up a variety of atoms with which group they belong, showing valence electrons. The third part to this card sort is matching real-word objects to the groups they belong. Students can visualize many components at once as they understand the differences among the groups. Students will have a handout of a blank periodic table to put information onto. I have kids in groups of 2 or 4 when I do this activity.
