Teaching Duration: I plan on 5 – 8 school days (50 minute periods) to complete this project, but it could also be lessened by assigning pieces to complete at home.
I use this after the students have been introduced to the periodic table and know some basics, like how to find atomic number and atomic mass. This project helps them become familiar with different trends and patterns within the periodic table.
Students will color code six versions of the periodic table (template provided) organizing the elements in the following manner:
Table 1 – Organized by Periods
Table 2 – Organized by Groups/Families
Table 3 – Organized by Element Key
Table 4 – Organized by Metals/Non-Metals/Metalloids
Table 5 – Organized by States of Matter
Table 6 – Organized by Radioactivity
I have used this as an assessment allowing students to use the “Periodic Table Packet” they colored coded to take the quiz. A copy of the assessment quiz I use is also included in this package. It is a word document so you may alter the assessment to fit your students’ needs.
