An epic war to decide the destiny of Europe lay in the hands of ancient Greek freedom fighters. It looked like they had no chance against the mighty Persian armies. Their victory stunned the world and changed the destiny of Europe.

Some 2500 years ago a rag tag group of Greek city-states led by the military genius of Athens and Sparta stopped the mighty Persian Empire from invading and conquering Europe.

Teach your students about the Persian Wars by comparing the battle strategies used by the Persians and the Greeks. This lesson enables your students to use critical thinking skills as they analyze the strengths and weaknesses of these warring opponents as they struggled to determine the fate of Europe.

This presentation teaches students how:

-to organize information chronologically

-compare strategies

-synthesize information

-analyze cause and effect

-use academic language in both discussions and writings

-present their findings coherently on paper.

-Students learn how to organize dates and facts on a time line, and battle strategies in a two column compare and contrast summary.

-Students analyze the battle plans examining terrain, strategies, goals and objectives for each battle.

-Using critical thinking the students discuss and write about the reasons behind each victory and loss using specific examples to support their assertions.

This presentation on the Persian War Battle Strategies covers:

-the background of Athens and Sparta

-the four battles between the Greeks and the Persians

Graphic organizers are used to clarify and organize the information. Lots of pictures, illustrations, and maps are included in every section. Throughout the slide show are discussions paired with writing activities. I have been successfully using this presentation with my 6th graders for the last seven years, however the content is appropriate up through high school.

The Persian War Battle Strategies gives your students the opportunity to examine and explore the goals and objectives of the Persian Empire and the Greek city-states. Built into the lesson are:

-academic vocabulary

-create a time line on Ancient Greece

-analytical and; critical thinking comparing battles strategies

-time for reflection and discussion

-short academic writing activities

-standards based questions with answers

This is an excellent resource to use either on its own or to supplement the text book. To better facilitate a multi-day presentation, there is a table of contents with hyperlinks to each section.
