In this lesson, students read the essay Home Girl by April Sinclair from the book Breakfast on Mars (ed. Stern, R & Wolfe, B, Roaring Book Press: New York, 2013) that answers the question What makes your family unique? The reader must infer the answer. Students then write about their own families, creating an essay that must be read to infer what makes the student’s family unique.
A template guides the student through prewriting the essay. A grading rubric is included.

This works well as a first week of school activity and essay – in place of What I did this summer.
