This activity was designed for high school economics students. Students are asked to pretend that they have just finished either high school and have entered the workforce, a two or four year college program, an apprenticeship, or military service and are now ready to strike out on their own in their first job. They must actually search for a real job being advertised somewhere in the country, calculate gross and net income, find a place to live by search the adds, figure out transportation, insurance costs, food expenses, etc.... Emphasis is placed on students having to search for answers to real-life problems faced by adults every day as they try to manage money and master the skill of budgeting expenses. Students should have a much better understanding of real-life budgeting when they complete this project.
