State Test was getting close and I knew my ELL third graders will write a personal narrative. Being ELL students, my third graders used to shiver at the mere thought of writing a paragraph (much more for writing a personal narrative)! I knew I needed something QUICK and SIMPLE to show my students that IT CAN BE DONE without them getting intimidated.
I showed them that there are only "three parts/boxes" that they needed to fill out to write a good story. Somehow, the visual representation of a personal narrative having only "three parts" as represented by the boxes made a big difference! They were so excited that they were unaware that in the process of filling out this graphic organizer they were actually incorporating all the things they learned in reading class: (literary elements, use of sensory details, figurative language, story catchers, etc.)
Of course, I had to model everything before letting them work on their own stories.
Included in this file are the following:
1) Personal Narrative Graphic Organizer
2) Model Sample
3) Three Student samples
You will notice that I allowed my students to "illustrate" by adding pictures to their stories.
