Personal Narrative Homework Bracelets with QR Codes! These Narrative Bracelets link students to short videos about the steps of writing personal narratives and also to vocabulary activities about the related key vocab. Meaningful homework for previewing or reviewing personal narrative writing steps. Makes great flipped classroom homework for ELA!
In addition to reviewing writing concepts learned that day and preparing students for the next lesson, these bracelets inform parents about what their child is learning at school, and empowers them to better support their child at home!
Print enough bracelets front/back for each student (black & white or color). Cut the bracelet strips between the dotted lines.Tape, glue, or staple the band around each child’s wrist (or onto their backpacks or folders).
Let students know you have a special video for them to watch at home to preview or review important narrative writing concepts, and that you’ve also linked vocabulary practice for them via the QR codes to help them rock this concept. The Vocabulary QR code links to a Quizlet.com page with key writing terms and definitions related to the bracelet’s personal narrative writing step.
There are several excellent vocabulary activities provided for this vocabulary set on Quizlet. Direct students to the type of vocabulary activity you’d like them to complete, or allow them to choose. The site includes traditional flash cards, matching, multiple choice quizzes, and more. (You may even wish to have students take a screen shot of their score and send it to your email to help you determine students’ level of understanding prior to the next lesson!)
At home, students present the bracelets to their parents to scan with their device, watch the video, and complete the vocabulary practice. Parent directions for how to download a free QR code scanner on their Smartphone, tablet, or iPad print on the back of each bracelet.
***Please NOTE:*** These Homework Bracelets link to Safeshare.tv to show educational YouTube videos using QR codes. If you plan to use these bracelets at school (rather than students' homes), please download the preview to test that the QR codes open on your school device (and on school WiFi) before purchasing. This is because some districts block YouTube, but it won't be an issue if parents use their own devices to access the videos at home. I value your time!***
To easily download a FREE QR Code Reader from the App Store (for iPhones & iPads) or Google Play (for Android phones and tablets), just search the phrase, “QR Code Reader” and choose the QR scanner you’d like. I personally use “QR Code Reader” on my Android and “QR Reader” on my iPad & iPhone. Both apps work well for me, but any free QR scanner will work!
