This is a Google Slides presentation that you could use with your students to give a mini-lesson on writing an introduction to a personal narrative that hooks the reader, sets the scene, and sets a thematic focus (matches the Common Core State Standards). It provides examples of each step with an introduction written by me, including several different types of hooks. The first slide is a think-pair-share that can be used in conjunction with any introductory scene from a movie. (When I did the lesson, I used the opening clip from Guardians of the Galaxy, and that worked very well.) This Slides presentation also includes an optional exit slip in which students will be responsible for relaying the three jobs of an introduction and write a hook for their own personal narrative.
