These are the seven prewriting lessons I use to prepare my students for drafting. It incorporates Thinking Maps and loosely follows the MAISA unit. The thing I like best about these lessons is that it gives students time to change their minds about which memory they want to use before they begin drafting. This technique is especially helpful with my boy students that don't like to write because this involves more thinking than writing.
When we were to the place that we were drafting our first draft, one of my special needs boys told me that he wasn't ready for class to end because he wanted to continue writing. My co-teacher told me that she hadn't seen him excited about anything at all this year, but he wanted to write that day.
