I created this 4-point Personal Narrative Rubric to show the level at which the writer plans her writing, shows an understanding of the features of the Personal Narrator Writing Genre, and uses proper grammar, usage and mechanics.
We begin the unit by discussing the rubric so that the students know what to expect. The students use the rubric as a guide when they draft, revise and edit their work. In addition, students use the rubrics to evaluate the work of a peer. After the students publish their work, I conference with them and ask them what they think their score is and ask them to justify their score. I explain to them what I notice. I give them a glow (something they did well) and a grow (something they need to work on). I give them their score and we discuss a goal that will help the writer grow, not just in this genre, but as the writer that she is becoming.
