This game is intended to make students THINK about what each part of an essay does for the work, and how it is connected to the rest of the essay. They will have to RACE the other groups to correctly determine the labels for each part of the essays they are given. Students will be challenged by higher levels of writing that make them truly think about what they are reading and how it works inside the essay.
Step 1 – Pass out a set of parts cards (pre-write plan sections) to each group.
Step 2 – Give each group a different personal narrative in pieces.
Step 3 – This is a race. Each group will read the cards and determine which part of the personal narrative goes with which each parts card. NOTE: The sections of the essay are in order in this document, so it acts as your key.
Step 4 – Assign points to the groups based on when they finish CORRECTLY.
Step 5 – When all the groups have finished all the different personal narrative essays, total up the points. Whichever group has the LEAST points, wins!
