In Jordan Sonnenblick's novel Drums, Girls, & Dangerous Pie, we hear the inner thoughts of the main character, Steven Alper, through his English journal. In his journal, Steven writes personal narratives about how his brother embarrasses him in front of the hottest girl in school, about how he is constantly being forgotten by the people who are supposed to love him most, and about his most defining moment, when he became his little brother's protector on the day he was born. In this Personal Narrative, your students are able to examine what their most defining moment has been thus far. Has it been when their sibling was born, or maybe when they lost a family member? Maybe it was when they achieved something they never thought they could, or when they finally learned something about themselves. This essay will help them examine what makes them who they truly are as people. This essay also comes with a rubric using a 0-4 scale to help score your student's essay and to help them understand your expectations.
