I find that students better understand writing when they have an example to follow. I use this during center time where students listen to the story independently but you could also use this as a whole group lesson. Students listen to the story Thank You Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco, and then answer some guided questions that help them focus on her writing style. When I use this during center time I have a QR printed that takes them to a youtube reading of the story. Students then are encourage to think of how to apply something they learned to their own personal narrative.
