During our launch unit, the students generate small moment ideas for their personal narrative stories. Prior to beginning the drafting process, I have students read through this example story (pp. 2-3) and answer questions (p. 1). Showing them an example and having them look for and recognize parts of the story such as dialogue, author's crafts, etc., really helps them get ready to write their own! We talk a lot about "reading like writers" in our class. The kids love seeing examples from mentor texts/authors, or other students, or me, and taking ideas to add to their own writing.
This could be used as a homework assignment.
