Help your students to write better leads and endings to their Personal Narratives with the help of this scaffolded resource!
I struggled to find a neat and tidy way to teach leads and endings, complete with a reference students could keep. Additionally, I have found that having students write their leads on a SEPARATE page before adding it to their draft makes it MUCH easier for me to monitor whether they are actually DOING IT or not, as well as the quality of their lead/ending. This way, I simply collect the worksheet to check for understanding, and once it's returned, they can then copy it into their story. OR, I know exactly who to pull for a small group.
TIP: The best thing I've ever done is to teach students to write a lead BEFORE they started writing their story. This way, I know they've started in an interesting way, and they weren't upset that they had to go back and change a bunch. Without teaching the leads, I found that many students just started writing without really showing me what was going on and what their story was going to be about. I was left with many questions. Overall, doing it this way has helped a TON, and after also teaching some "show don't tell," the rest kind of fell into place!
