Do you have students who struggle with keeping hands and feet to self or can often be found in others’ personal space? This resource will help them by teaching the importance and boundaries of personal space with peers. The Power Card Strategy is a visually based strategy used to connect an appropriate behavior or social skill to a child’s special interest (hero, cartoon character, role model). While the research has been done with children with Autism, this strategy can be used with any child who is struggling behaviorally. The idea is to have the child associate the desired behavior with their special interest or hero rather than coming from the adult.

This particular resource is centered around The Super Space Team and their adventures of being heroes. It includes the following components:

1. The Power Card Story (social story that includes 8 half sheet pages when printed):

A short story is included that describes how members of The Super Space Team solve the problem and become the heroes by respecting one another’s personal space in training and defeating the villains who zap strength from others when entering their personal space. Ideally, the student should read the story individually or with an adult each day as a preventative approach. Another time to review the story would be following the unwanted behavior—when the student is not keeping hands or feet to self or not respecting someone’s personal space.

2. The Power Card:

The power card is a small card with pictures that provides a recap of the strategies learned in the story. Following the initial reading of the story, the student is given the power card to keep. This card serves as a way to generalize the skill to new settings. Two boy and two girl versions of the power card are included. The card should be available for the student to refer to throughout the day.
