This personal word wall is composed of sight words and high frequency words. Many people believe sight words and high frequency words are interchangeable. Although many high frequency words are also sight words, there is a difference. Sight words, (I like the term “snap” words) are typically words that students recognize immediately (within three seconds-in a “snap”) and can read without having to use decoding skills while high frequency words are words that are commonly found in the English language. Fifty percent of our written material is made up of these most frequently used words. This word wall list correlates with text levels D-I (Fountas & Pinell levels) or levels 5-16 (Reading Recovery). The words on this list are words that kids will encounter at these various text levels and would be most appropriate and found in a first grade classroom. I would suggest making two copies per child; one for writing workshop and one for small group reading instruction. They provide an excellent reference for kids when writing.
