Instead of kids always hearing us say "microorganisms" during ecosystem and ecology units, they get to know a few of the ACTUAL SPECIES involved. This activity is great because it "personalizes" decomposers.
Students are given names and pictures of several different decomposer species. They pick 3 of these to research on the internet. They look for how it reproduces, how it contributes to it's nutrient cycle, where it lives, etc. This works great in-class or for homework.
