Personalized Birthday Greetings Historical Facts Editable
This is a set of events that occurred on specific dates intended as a lifelong tool to offer birthday greetings for intermediate elementary students and above. Please don't be put off by the number of pages--you only print one at a time, as needed when birthdays in your class come around.
This was truly a labor of love, created over a few years. It all started when I had a student whose birthday is 9/11. Right as the school year began, the message this poor boy was bombarded with was that this was a terrible day, a day that will live in infamy, a tragic day… My heart broke for him. It was his birthday, for goodness sake!
I wanted him to know that many wonderful things happened on that date too. I found many sites for important events that happened on specific dates, but couldn’t just print them out as many events were too awful or adult. I selected information I hoped would be positive for the most part and hopefully interesting, using many resources to compile these. I tried diligently to verify dates via many avenues, but there were a few that were conflicting between sources. Please, DO feel free to let me know if there’s an error you can confirm.
Well, you can’t do for one without doing for all, and over the years I’ve compiled many similar greetings, recently filling in missing dates to make a calendar set.
I laminate them as birthdays approach, and the children love what has become a tradition in my class. The children get very excited when I start the day off with, “You may not be aware of it, but this is an extremely important day in history…” In addition to honoring the birthday child, something on the list invariably sparks a class conversation and often research projects.
This set includes all dates, including February 29th, with birthstones and star signs. The number of events varies a bit from day to day, as some dates simply had more interesting, appropriate events than others. I did leave in some things that were a TINY bit on the dark side, because kids seem to get a kick out of oddities like Alcatraz opening and mysterious explosions.
This is a Word document, so you can insert your name and the student’s in the appropriate places, as well as change the font and coloring if not to your liking. They currently are all made out generically to “Jane Smith” from “Your Teacher,” in portrait layout.
I hope your students, friends, family, and colleagues love them as much as mine do!
