In an ideal world, 7th/8th grade students would have already mastered grade-level vocabulary. Many have not. . . and some are above grade level. Individualized spelling/vocabulary gives students a chance to learn words they haven't yet mastered and/or expand their vocabulary (depending on individual level). Spelling/vocab journals require students to use the words in context, examine root information, and actually learn the words versus the standard memorization and regurgitation. Students need to show mastery of terms (spelling AND meaning) on two consecutive tests before taking the word of their lists. All lists are personalized.
**Purchase includes a modified version of the Spelling Journal.
Directions: Complete your spelling journal using the following steps to find words:
1. Your own writing. If you have any spelling errors (in any classes), write them in your spelling journal
2. The Sitton 1200 list. These are the 1200 words most commonly used in English; you might as well know how to spell and use them
3. If you've mastered all the above, move on to "100 Words every 8th grade student should know," and continue down with the links included.
