This is one of my most favorite activities! Students remember it for years! Basically, you are presenting them with an enormous research project...that you have no intention of really giving them. This will take your best poker face! I have made the possible topics as oblique and dull as possible. This only adds to the fun! Then, when students (or you) can't take it any more, introduce the challenge activity! Students will work in groups of two or three to come up with a claim, reasons, a response to the counterclaim, and where they would find research...all of this to persuade me NOT to give them this research assignment. A great lead-in to your argumentative unit!
