This product consists of a 22 minute illustrated talk on video covering various aspects of Jane Austen's writing style and comic technique. Her use of language, irony, parody, caricature, and burlesque are noted with illustrated examples. Her employment of free indirect speech is explained as well as the use of humorous characterization. This resource would be a useful aid to understanding the technical aspects of Jane Austen's writing and could be used in the teaching of any of her novels. The talk could be a valuable starting point from which to discuss further examples of Austen's writing craft.
