Grades 3 - 6
I believe that teaching media literacy is an essential part of teaching reading in today's world, especially for younger children. I wanted to provide learners with the opportunity to look closely at the words and techniques advertisers use to persuade them to purchase their products and services. I wanted Ads that allowed children to focus solely on the words then branch out into Ads which included visuals. Unfortunately, the Ads I found were often not suited for younger children. I spent hours trying to find short persuasive messages where learners where not overwhelmed by the length of the text and provided engaging content. This led me to develop Ads to Analyze.
Ads to Analyze contains 100 persuasive messages perfect for introducing or practicing critical thinking skills in reading. There are enough Ads to give lots of variety when teaching whole class, small group, literacy centers and independent work. Ads to Analyze provides the entire class the opportunity to discuss and debate how advertisers try to persuade them and then apply these same techniques in their own Ads.
As a bonus, the Ads also act as an engaging classroom library or book sale display.
This resource contains:
*List and definitions of 12 common advertising techniques children need to know
*5 lessons (repeated can be used up to 12 times based on the needs of your learners) to help children identify the advertising techniques
*Supplementary 'real life' advertisements that can be used along with the Ads in the resource to extend the number of lessons to up to 4 weeks
*Ideas for book displays
*3 reading response activities that can be used throughout the year
*8 blank speech bubbles for children to create their own advertisement and reading response
*1 copy of each speech bubble advertisement on a single page large enough for display purposes and whole class teaching
*Smaller sized speech bubble advertisements (4 per page) for small group and individual activities
