This is a three week argumentative unit focused around the topic: Is Your Meat Safe"? There is much confusion and debate on whether or not antibiotics and hormones should be allowed to be used in animals for food consumption. In fact, the debate has reached Capitol Hill. Students will view online videos and read informational texts along with research findings that support both stances (for and against antibiotic use in meat producing animals). Students will conduct their own research, decide which stance they want to defend, then write a persuasive essay defending their point of view. At the end of the unit, students will be grouped according to their opinions on this topic. The groups of students will create either an ad, commercial, blog, or newspaper editorial that summarizes their finding and opinions.

The unit is developed for grades 9-10, but can be adapted for older grades.
