Product Description
This activity has been created with the understanding that oral language practise will help to enhance students’ writing, and can be used as a way to brainstorm and elaborate upon ideas. This activity provides students with oral language prompts that require students to share and explain their opinions. It is the perfect activity to enhance any persuasive writing unit.

Instructions: Students are put into pairs and given a tic-tac-toe board. Each board has a different theme with statements related to the theme. This game is to be played like any game of tic-tac-toe. Students take turns choosing a square to place their “x” or “o”. However, students may not place their “x” or “o” until they have responded to the statement in the square by agreeing or disagreeing with the statement and providing their rationale. Just like tic-tac-toe, you win once you have a row of either “x” or “o”.

On each board, there are sentence starters for students to refer to. For example, “In my opinion…:, “I strongly believe…”, “the reason I think this is…”.

The topics of the boards include:

* The environment
* Like and dislikes
* Healthy eating
* Sports
* Celebrities
* School (x2)
* Supernatural
* Television
* Animals
* Laws
* Money
* Poverty
* Family/ house rules
* Body Image
* Would you rather

These topics have been created for junior and intermediate students as some are light-hearted, but many require deeper critical thinking about important issues.

Extras: I have included two graphic organizers that can be used to write persuasive writing pieces. The “OREO” organizer is for students to work towards writing an essay on one of the provided topics. The “APE” organizer is for students to create persuasive paragraphs.

Enjoy!
