This a guided persuasive essay unit. I have included two articles to compare and analyze the argument from both sides. The essay is a 4 paragraph persuasive essay piece that has students pick a position for or against wearing hijab based on the evidence in the two articles. A short video to introduce them to the topic is included and serves as a great class warm up and introduction to the topic. A class debate strategy known as a "class divided" is included in the directions for the unit and is a great day long class activity to get students discussing the issues. This essay is a great piece for students who need a great deal of guidance with their writing, or you can modify it for more advanced writers. Either way, students really enjoy this powerfully charged, relevant topic.
