THE PERSUASIVE ESSAY:
A unit that focuses on the power of process.
This writing package represents the process I have been using successfully for years, whenever I begin an essay writing unit. I want my students to know that good writing happens in the brain, not just on the paper. We use a workshop approach and work through a process that asks them to reflect on their writing and to actively work toward improving it.
For the first stage, there are mini-lessons on writing introductions and conclusions, creating effective topic sentences and fully developed paragraphs. Then students work on their own outlines and first drafts. After self and peer revision, they move to the second stage. During this time they receive mini-lessons about improving their writing with transitions, variety, conciseness and effective word choice. Next, they will write a second draft and then edit their essays. Finally, they will do a self-evaluation.
Included are detailed and step-by-step lessons and handouts that will help both brand new and seasoned teachers. There are also sample paragraphs and essays for the students to evaluate, and revision checklists to help guide them as they improve their essays.
My students love this process--it gets positive reviews every time!
