One of the hardest writing unit to teach is the persuasive essay. Starting in third grade, students are required to produce a persuasive essay on most standardized tests. This resource will walk you and your students step-by-stepthrough the persuasive essay writing process.

This simple, easy to follow format will ask your students to build an argument to support their claim about a self-selected topic they're passionate about.

Included in the student packet:

◼️Brainstorm a Topic-students create a web of topics that they are interested in.

◼️Make a Claim-students choose a topic and make a claim. They will decide on their audience and 3 reasons to support.

◼️Research-students will research to find facts in support of their claim

◼️Powerful Words-students will make a list of persuasive words and learn about transition words

◼️Drafting the Argument

➙ Introduction- students will start with a hook and write their claim

➙ Reasons/Evidence-students will state their reasons and support them with evidence.

➙ Counterargument/Conclusion-students will think of a possible opposing reason and come up with a response. Then they will conclude with a powerful ending.

◼️Revising/Editing Checklist-a student friendly checklist that students can use to revise and edit their draft.

◼️Persuasive Essay Final Draft Paper

◼️Bonus Materials- student friendly research websites and photos of student examples.
