Students encounter persuasive language all the time, often without even realising it. One of the most obvious uses of persuasive language is in political speeches.

These FIVE worksheets each focus on extracts from different political speeches and test students' knowledge of different persuasive language techniques.

CONTENTS:

Winston Churchill: This worksheet focuses on an extract from Churchill’s ‘We Shall Fight On the Beaches’ speech. Students are required to read the extract and then complete a table, identifying the effects of the different techniques.

William Wilberforce: This worksheet focuses on an extract from Wilberforce’s ‘Abolition Speech’. Students are required to read the extract and then complete a longer table on the second page, identifying the effects of the different techniques.

Emmeline Pankhurst: This worksheet focuses on various extracts from Pankhurst’s ‘Freedom or Death’ speech. Students have to read the extracts and then annotate it, identifying all of the different techniques employed.

Barack Obama: This worksheet focuses on extracts from Obama’s 2008 democratic presidential nomination acceptance speech. Students read extracts and then respond by identifying and explaining persuasive language techniques.

John F. Kennedy: This worksheet focuses on JFK’s inaugural address. Students read the extract and then have to answer specific questions on the piece.
