This unit serves a dual purpose. First, it allows the students writing the letter to research and understand the importance of staying in school. Second, the letter impacts the high school-er, reminding him or her of the reasons to stay in school. All this while practicing opinion/persuasive writing, using evidence to support an opinion, and going through the entire writing process.
I have done this activity in my class room. It seemed to really impact my students. They enjoyed doing something relevant. My students also appreciated the incentive of writing to a real high school student.
