This writing project combines persuasion with the personal narrative. For example, the student convinces the reader that he or she has certain character trais, has an interesting memory from the past, or has been a hero in a difficult situation. Students receive a prewriting question sheet to give them ideas. They also receive techniques for writing good hooks, writing claims, and using persuasive techniques. Then, a detailed graphic organizer helps them organize their essays. Finally, they write their first drafts! My students are always eager to write about themselves, but the persuasive teachniques make them even more motivated to write about themselves. Teachers can also use this as a great minilesson on persuasive techniques.
