This product includes five sets of position cards and a persuasive vocabulary activity.
35 Card Sort
Students use the position cards to identify the author's stance on a certain topic. Each set of position cards has a statement. There are six other statements that either argue for or against the original statement. Students sort these six cards into two categories: 'for' and 'against'. This activity gives students practice in interpreting persuasive writing. This activity works well when completed in partners or small groups where students have an opportunity to discuss the arguments.
Identifying Persuasive Techniques and Using Persuasive Vocabulary
This product also includes a school newsletter that features a persuasive article and several persuasive ads. Students read the newsletter and then identify and analyze the persuasive techniques used in the newsletter. An accompanying worksheet and key is included. The newsletter and worksheet target the following vocabulary: exaggeration, rhetorical question, misleading statement, contradictory statement, causality (cause and effect) and comparison. This activity can be completed individually and it also works well when done as group work.
