This is a powerpoint presentation and resources to teach and practice persuasive techniques both in advertising and persuasive writing.
The following persuasive techniques are discussed within these lessons:
· Emotional Appeal
· Expert Opinion/Statistical Evidence
· Glittering Generality
The power point presentation is used to present the information while students take notes. If students are keeping a notebook, this lesson lends itself well to keeping all of their notes in their notebooks. Notetaking of all of the techniques may take more than one class period. When they begin taking notes, each student should get a copy of the persuasive advertisements. These can be glued into their notes as a visual example of each technique.
When students have finished the notes, they can use the persuasive paragraphs worksheet to analyze and identify the technique being used.
There is also a foldable graphic organizer that is to be used as a study guide. Once students are ready to be tested on persuasive techniques, I give them a foldable to glue into their notes. They should review their notes and summarize each technique into their own words under the flaps. They can then quiz themselves on the terms using the flaps.
