This PowerPoint begins with a fun game, "Guess the Logo." Students see the picture first and see if they can figure out what the logo represents. The next part of the PowerPoint goes through understanding logos, pathos, and ethos. This includes a link to a youtube video. The PowerPoint gives an example of a print advertisement and a video advertisement for each different type. Students then play a game where I show them a picture of an advertisement and they must identify if it's logos, pathos, or ethos by writing their answers on a whiteboard.
Finally, the PowerPoint shows examples of advertisements using these specific techniques; Loaded Language
Testimonial or Endorsements
Name-calling/ Stereotype/ Propaganda
Flag waving or Patriotism
Slide 42 includes an activity that the students did in class. This was not a worksheet that I created, but it included different examples of advertisements and they had to work together to write down which technique was being used. Slide 43 includes an activity where students cut out three different ads and make a poster explaining what persuasive techniques are being used. Finally, there is a homework assignment called "Commercial Dig." I did not create this worksheet so it is not included. But basically students had to watch TV and identify three different commercials, write down what the purpose of the commercial was, and how appealing the product was to them.
