This activity helps to introduce persuasive writing. This has the student start to understand what it means to persuade somebody to think the way they do.

I used this as an opening activity or "hook" at the beginning of our persuasive writing unit. After this, I was able to refer back to it several times throughout the unit to help them relate the topic to them for further understanding.

Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.
