This is an assignment meant to test students' ability to write persuasively using the Rhetorical Strategies of the Aristotelian Method (specifically, the fields of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos). In this assignment, students choose a topic of interest to them, a stance to take on this matter, and a specific audience to communicate to, and write a 3 - 4 page paper which shows the student's ability to effectively employ Ethos, Pathos, and Logos in their persuasion methods, as well as their understanding of matching their tone and approach correctly to their audience.
This assignment is designed to take place over a few weeks' time. It is intended to be used in conjunction with a lesson or unit in which a class is taught the Aristotelian Method of persuasive communication, but it will also function adequately as a stand-alone assignment, so long as students are familiar with the concepts of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos, as well as how and why they are used in argument. This assignment was intended for use by students at a competitively mid- to high-level in Grades 9 and 10, but will service a sufficiently advanced Grade 8 class, and will still be useful for Grades 11 and 12. Simple, no-frills design.
