This is a Two-Part Lesson Plan featuring: 1) Persuasive Writing 2) Debating
You are provided with 35 possible topics to assign or from which to have your students choose for their persuasive paragraph writing and/or debate performance. For 12 of the 35 topics I supplied possible reasons to support each side of the argument. These reasons can be used for modelling, brainstorming, or discussion.
There is much flexibility built into this lesson plan. You can sequence activities as you like. By all means use the components in a way to suit your teaching purposes. Being a word document, the lesson plan lends itself to customization. Besides use as a teaching plan, use it as input for teacher committees, in-serving and college course work. Lesson Plan features are:
Overview - Focus of Instruction – Definitions - Teacher Modelling - Large and Small-Group Brainstorming - PreWriting - Debate Preparation and Criteria - Debate Practice - Revision Procedures – Further Practice - Debate Day – Panel of Judges – Whole Class Review – Teacher Commentary - Assessment Using Two Student Outcomes – and Additional Instruction.
Definitions are for the words: summarizing, convincing, for, against, pro, con, debate. The lesson is 6 ½ pages long.
