Description

This persuasive writing unit has everything you need to teach your students how to plan, write, edit and publish a persuasive piece of writing. Students are inspired to produce their best writing when they write about topics that are relevant to their own lives. This unit begins with a persuasive letter from you, their teacher, explaining why you think more homework is a good idea. The letter is already written for you, simply sign your name and it is ready to present to your students. Students are passionate about the topic and are excited to learn how to respond to you with counter-arguments!

Using the letter from you as the launching point, students are taken through lessons on how to write a persuasive letter (how to create a good hook, tailoring arguments to a particular audience, anticipating and planning for counter-arguments and how to effectively include persuasive techniques into their writing). Links to short videos with relevant subject areas are also included to demonstrate some of these techniques to students.

For the project, students choose from the topic task cards provided and write a persuasive letter on a topic that is of interest to them. Graphic organizers for planning, writing and editing are all included in this resource. There is even a choice of 2 teacher assessment tools to fit your needs: a simple checkbric or a more in depth rubric using the six traits of writing. There are also suggestions for extension activities for early finishers or students seeking extra credit.
