The purpose of this unit is to introduce ESOL students in levels 1 to 3 to persuasive writing. We use the Writer’s Workshop model to develop these writing skills. Students will have mini lessons with appropriate modifications per level of English proficiency. The mini lessons will also have writing time, sharing time, and they will be asked to publish and share one final product. The final product will consist on a persuasive essay about a movie students watched. Should we watch that movie or not? Vocabulary related to movies is included.
In this unit we also devote time to improve their overall grammar and conventions of Standard English. The grammar portion has Dependent Clauses and Prepositional Phrases. As far as punctuation, students wil have a printable with a different punctuation marks and how they are used.
NOTE: Once you open the Teacher folder and access the lesson plans, CLICK on VIEW and CHECK the NAVIGATION PANE box. This will allow you to go straight to essential questions or the lessons by days.
Even though this unit has the common standards for high school, the lessons could be taught in middle school as well, however, you wil have to change the standards to match your grade level!
