For each essay that is written in my class, a speech is also presented. The Pennsylvania State Standards are addressed in terms of writing, so all of the writing categories have accompanying speeches.
The Persuasive speech is our last, so the grading is more stringent than the other speeches. The way I grade speeches is as follows: For each speaker, I, the teacher, and three classmates evaluate the speaker. I think constructive criticism is highly valuable. Using the grade sheet, I add up all the scores. The three classmates' scores are added together, and then that total is added to my score. I then divide by two for the overall score. Then, when I distribute the grade sheets, students have not only my feedback, but comments provided by peers.
I have found this method to be highly effective. Let me know what you think. Dennie
