Use these cards when students have finished their non-fiction piece and they will be sharing them with their classmates. Students will each get both sheets (8 cards total) to choose from. You can use the cards by having them rotate through partnerships or just reflect with their writing partner. Students will swap writing pieces and after they read it they will choose one or more of these cards to fill out. It gives them sentence starters connected to the Common Core State Standards as to what aspects of the writing piece they should comment on.
I have found these very helpful because it deters students from general comments such as “great piece” or “ I like your topic.” It starts meaningful conversations about how students chose to embed writing mini-lessons into their piece. I found these conversations from the cards to be a driving force in students then applying some of the strategies their peers included into their own piece. Sometimes reading each others pieces was just as if not more powerful than the mini-lesson.
