Sea World and other marine parks have come into the spotlight over the last couple of years. Students are told that they are going to write an article for their local newspaper explaining their opinion about how they feel about whales being held in captivity.
There are two articles provided that give information about whales in captivity, both discussing information that will help your student form their own opinions, which will then help them write their essay.
Students are also given a note page, a graphic organizer to get them through the planning stage of planning, as well as stationary to write their letter.
This activity allows students to read articles, while practicing using text details to support their claim, a common core standard of writing.
Please note, I have this project listed as taking a week. This would be the approximate length if you used this as a complete project using the stages of writing.
Thanks for looking,
