In the 2014-2015 NFL season, the New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady was accused of deflating footballs which were used in a playoff game, therefore giving the team an unfair advantage. Some say he was wrongfully accused, while others say that his punishment was deserved.Kids are asked to read an article (Lexile of 870) about this topic, and then to write a persuasive essay about whether Brady’s punishment was too tough, and whether or not Brady should have been punished at all.
There is also a poem included called, "Teach Them Young." Students are asked to use both the article and the poem when writing their persuasive essay.
Students are also given a note page, a graphic organizer to get them through the planning stage of planning, as well as stationary to write their letter.
This activity allows students to read articles, while practicing using text details to support their claim, a common core standard of writing.
Please note, I have this project listed as taking a week. This would be the approximate length if you used this as a complete project using the stages of writing.
